Dragonwilds cooking guide: fast levelling, recipes and food buffs
How Cooking works in RuneScape: Dragonwilds, the quickest ways to level it from 1 to 99, and how to grow your own ingredients so you never run short.
The short version
- Cooking a single ingredient gives 10 XP, a drink 15 XP and a meal 20 XP.
- Cook ingredients on a campfire or grill, then combine them into drinks and meals on a stone range or cooking range.
- Each ingredient has a power level. New power levels unlock at Cooking 1, 12, 27, 41, 50 and 75, and you burn less the higher you go.
- From level 16, the Sweet Veg Ball gives +10% XP in every skill. From level 20, Internal Alchemy keeps that buff running for 10 nature runes a cast.
- The best ingredients for levelling (potatoes, cabbages, redberries, wheat) all grow in Ash farming plots, so Cooking and Farming level well together.
How Cooking works in Dragonwilds
Cooking has been in RuneScape: Dragonwilds since launch in April 2025, and like the other skills it now goes all the way to level 99 (the cap was raised in March 2026). It turns raw ingredients into food and drink, which keep three things topped up:
- Sustenance: your hunger. Almost every food restores it.
- Hydration: your thirst, restored mainly by drinks such as infusions.
- Health: most cooked food heals you as well.
Many meals and drinks also give a temporary perk, such as bonus XP or resistance to a type of damage. Cooking works in two steps:
- Cook single ingredients on a campfire or grill: a potato becomes a baked potato, raw farm meat becomes a steak. Each one gives 10 Cooking XP.
- Combine them on a stone range or cooking range into drinks (15 XP) and meals (20 XP), which are far better food.
Because meals are made from already-cooked ingredients, every meal earns you XP twice: once for each ingredient and again for the meal itself.
Cooking stations
| Station | Unlock | Build cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Campfire | Start | 4 ash logs, 4 stone | Cooks single ingredients and boils dirty water into clean water. Needs fuel. Must not have a roof over it. |
| Stone range | Use a campfire or pick up an animal bone | 8 ash logs, 12 stone, 3 animal bones | Combines ingredients into meals and infusions. Needs a roof. |
| Cooking range | Cooking 16 | 18 ash planks, 8 bronze bars, 20 stone, 8 clay, 10 fire runes | Works like the stone range with many more recipes. Needs a roof. |
| Grill | Cooking 26 (Grill Master) | 12 ash logs, 4 stone, 2 leather, 6 fire runes | Cooks single ingredients like a campfire, but needs no fuel. |
To learn a range recipe you sometimes need to interact with the right station first. For example, you only see the cooking range in your build menu after you've used a basic campfire at level 16, and recipes such as the Sweet Veg Ball need you to use a stone range once.
Tip: roofs matter
Campfires need open sky, but both ranges need a roof. A common setup is a covered kitchen with your ranges inside and campfires or grills just outside the door.
Campfire fuel: what burns longest
Campfires burn fuel while they cook, and a new campfire comes with one ash log already in it. Better wood lasts much longer:
| Fuel | Burn time |
|---|---|
| Ash logs, ash plank, yew plank | 1 min |
| Oak logs, oak plank | 1 min 30 s |
| Charcoal, blightwood | 2 min |
| Willow logs | 2 min 30 s |
| Maple logs | 3 min |
| Yew logs | 3 min 30 s |
| Fuel pellet | 6 min |
Yew planks burn for only a minute, the same as ash logs, so burn yew logs instead. Once you reach level 26, grills remove fuel from the picture entirely.
Power levels and burning
Every ingredient has a power level. Your Cooking level decides which power levels you can handle and how often you burn them. Each new power level comes with a Culinary Confidence perk:
| Power level | Cooking level | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1 | Redberries, eggs, raw bird meat, raw rat meat |
| 2 | 12 | Potato, cabbage, tomato, mushrooms, raw farm and game meat, flour, shrimp, sardine, trout |
| 3 | 27 | Dwellberries, onion, peach, raw bestial meat, anchovies, herring, salmon |
| 4 | 41 | Cadavaberries, pumpkin, watermelon, undead meat, maple sap, lobster and most later fish |
| 5 | 50 | Cactus steak |
| 6 | 75 | Highest tier |
When a power level unlocks, your burn chance for those ingredients is cut in half. It then keeps falling a little with every level after that (by roughly 2–4.5% per level, depending on the tier). In practice, ingredients you unlocked a while ago almost never burn, while freshly unlocked ones still burn now and then.
Burnt food isn't wasted
Burnt food is worth 10 compost each in a compost bin, the same as most plants. Toss your mistakes in the bin and they'll boost your next harvest. See the compost section of our farming guide.
At level 99 the Cooking cape stops you burning food altogether while you wear it.
Food, drinks and buffs
Eating rules
- There's a 2-second delay between eating one food and the next.
- Your sustenance tops out at 100. Eating past that builds up Over Eating, and once you're 200 over, you can't eat for 15 seconds.
- Some foods, like redberries, can be eaten raw, but most must be cooked first.
- For healing, pick foods with a high health-to-sustenance ratio, so you heal without filling up. For long trips, look at health and sustenance per unit of weight.
How perks stack
- Only one food perk is active at a time. Eating another perk food replaces it.
- Eating plain food without a perk doesn't remove your current perk.
- Potions work the same way among themselves, so you can have one food perk and one potion perk at once.
| Food | Health | Sustenance | Weight | Perk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dried redberries | 20 | 15 | 0.1 | — |
| Steak | 30 | 20 | 1.0 | — |
| Sweet Veg Ball | 70 | 65 | 0.5 | +10% XP, all skills (5 min) |
| Wild Pie | 90 | 110 | — | +10% XP and less shock damage (10 min) |
Dried redberries are worth a special mention: at 0.1 weight they're the lightest food around, and they're cooked from berries you can grow yourself.
Recipes worth knowing
| Recipe | Ingredients | Station | Level | XP |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Clean water | Dirty water | Campfire | 1 | 1 |
| Redberry infusion | Clean water, redberries | Stone or cooking range | — | 15 |
| Bread | Bag of flour (wheat ground at a grindstone) | — | 12 | 10 |
| Sweet Veg Ball | Fried cabbage, baked potato, dried redberries | Stone or cooking range | 16 | 20 |
| Wild Pie | Fried onions, baked potato, dried dwellberries, bread | Cooking range | 36 | 20 |
The redberry infusion restores 40 hydration and gives Quenched, which slows thirst by a third for five minutes. It's a cheap way to stay hydrated on long trips.
Perk recipes unlock in batches at levels 14 (Teamonger), 16 (Amateur Culinaromancer) and 36 (Adept Culinaromancer). Teas such as strong tea use tea leaves that are dried in a kiln and then ground at a grindstone.
Cooking and Farming: grow your own ingredients
Most of the crops in Dragonwilds farming are Cooking ingredients, and the two skills feed each other in both directions.
| Crop | Farming plot | Cooks into | Power level |
|---|---|---|---|
| Redberries | Ash (bush) | Dried redberries | 1 |
| Potato | Ash | Baked potato | 2 |
| Cabbage | Ash | Fried cabbage | 2 |
| Wheat | Ash | Flour, then bread | 2 |
| Tomato | Oak | Grilled tomatoes | 2 |
| Onion | Oak | Fried onions | 3 |
| Dwellberries | Oak (bush) | Dried dwellberries | 3 |
| Pumpkin | Willow | Roast pumpkin | 4 |
| Watermelon | Willow | Watermelon jerky | 4 |
| Cadavaberries | Willow (bush) | Dried cadavaberries | 4 |
The Ash-plot kitchen garden
Every ingredient of the Sweet Veg Ball (cabbage, potato and redberries) grows in an Ash plot. A small bank of Ash plots therefore gives you an endless supply of the best early XP food in the game, and the redberry bush keeps producing without replanting. Add wheat for bread, plus onions and dwellberries from Oak plots, and you can make Wild Pies too.
How each skill helps the other
- Farming to Cooking: steady crops mean you're never short of power level 2 ingredients, the backbone of levels 12 to 40.
- Cooking to Farming: the Sweet Veg Ball's +10% XP boost applies to Farming too, so eat one before a big harvest.
- Burnt food goes into the compost bin, and compost raises your next harvest.
- Clean water boiled at a campfire is an ingredient of plant cure, which saves diseased crops. (You can't use boiled water in a watering can, though.)
Planning a kitchen garden? Check how many plots of potatoes or cabbages keep themselves in seed at your Farming level.

Fastest way to level Cooking, 1 to 99
Cooking XP comes in fixed amounts per item (10, 15 or 20), so the fastest method is whichever lets you cook the most items with the fewest trips. Here's the route we recommend.
Levels 1–12: campfire basics
- Cook every power level 1 ingredient you find: dry redberries, fry eggs, and cook bird and rat meat for 10 XP each.
- Build a stone range early and turn clean water and redberries into redberry infusions for 15 XP each, more than the berries alone.
- Start your Ash plots now (see the farming guide), so potatoes and cabbages are ready by level 12.
Levels 12–16: farm vegetables
- Power level 2 opens up potatoes, cabbages, tomatoes, steak and bread: plenty to cook at 10 XP each.
- Keep cooking the vegetables you'll need for Sweet Veg Balls, rather than eating them.
Levels 16–36: the Sweet Veg Ball loop
This is the core of early Cooking. Each Sweet Veg Ball takes three cooked ingredients and one meal:
- Baked potato, fried cabbage and dried redberries: 3 × 10 = 30 XP
- Combining them into a Sweet Veg Ball: 20 XP
- 50 XP per ball, and the ball itself gives +10% XP for five minutes
Keep one ball's buff running the whole time you're cooking, and you're earning bonus XP on every item. From level 20, Internal Alchemy keeps that buff going without eating more balls. At level 26, swap campfires for grills: they need no fuel, so you can load several up and leave them.
Levels 36–41: Wild Pies
Adept Culinaromancer adds the Wild Pie: fried onions, baked potato, dried dwellberries and bread. That's four ingredients at 10 XP, plus 20 for the pie, so 60 XP per pie. Its buff lasts ten minutes and also reduces shock damage. You need level 41 Cooking for the maple syrup in the Dowdun Reach main quest, so this is a good stretch to push through.
Level 41 onwards: buying redberries with garou chits
Once you've reached Umbral Sands and made progress in the Ictlharin's Little Helper quest, garou merchants sell redberries for 3 garou chits each. Drying them gives 10 XP apiece with no farming or gathering needed. Using the wiki's numbers from level 41:
| Target | XP needed | Redberries | Redberries, boosted | Chits, boosted |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Level 50 | 24,084 | 2,409 | 1,604 | ≈4,812 |
| Level 75 | 167,168 | 16,717 | 11,134 | ≈33,402 |
| Level 95 | 431,179 | 43,118 | 28,717 | ≈86,151 |
| Level 99 | 983,490 | 98,349 | 65,501 | ≈196,503 |
With an empty inventory and the Personal Chest spell you can buy around 5,000 redberries per trip, so 99 takes roughly 13 trips with boosts. Build a lodestone near the merchants to cut the walking.
The big one: a crunchies farm
For players who want to train Cooking and Farming together, the wiki describes a large farm built around dwellberry and redberry crunchies, made from wheat and berries. The full version uses about 135 Ash plots of wheat and 80 Oak plots of dwellberries, with super compost and a row of 10 grills cooking stacks of berries overnight. It aims for about 990 crunchies a day, worth roughly 40,000 Cooking XP daily, with matching Farming XP from the harvests.
- Farming in the Stormtouched Highlands means rain does your watering for you. Build a few lightning rods to protect the farm.
- Crunchies don't replace your other food XP buffs, so they double as food while you train combat.
- It's a big build (over 1,700 logs for plots alone), so grow into it rather than starting at full size.
XP boosts and tricks
| Boost | Bonus | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Inspiring Ring of Cooking | +5% | Trinket, always on while worn |
| Knowledgable Nourishment | +10% | From the Sweet Veg Ball (5 min) or Wild Pie (10 min). Applies to every skill. |
| Weak or Lesser Focused Cooking potion | +15% | 5 or 10 minutes |
| Focused or Super Focused Cooking potion | +30% | 5 or 10 minutes |
A ring, one food perk and one potion perk can all be active together, and boosts multiply rather than add.
Internal Alchemy: a buff that never runs out
Unlocked at Cooking 20, Internal Alchemy costs 10 nature runes, has a 210-second cooldown and refreshes your active food and infusion perks, healing you again as it does. Because the cooldown is shorter than the five-minute Sweet Veg Ball buff, you can recast it before the buff ends and keep +10% XP running all day from a single meal.
- Cast it with at least 6 seconds left on the buff, or the buff expires first and the cast is wasted.
- It doesn't refresh potions.
- Nature runes are cheaper than the meals they replace, so keep your food for when you actually need it.
Bones to Peaches: free food
At Cooking 28, Bones to Peaches (5 earth and 10 nature runes, 3-second cooldown) turns up to 10 animal bones on the ground into peaches. Paired with Bark to Bones, it can cover most of your hunger without touching your cooked food.
Outdated methods to avoid
The dirty water loop no longer works
Several guides from April 2025 recommend filling cooking pots with dirty water and ash logs and purifying it in bulk. That stopped being worthwhile within days: Jagex rebalanced water-purifying XP on 24 April 2025, and the cooking pot was replaced by the stone range in September 2025. Boiling dirty water now gives just 1 XP, so only do it when you need clean water.
Watch out for older guides that mention a level 65 cap or power levels that have since changed. Ingredient power levels were rebalanced when the cap went up to 99, and several fish were moved down to power level 4 after Fishing was added in April 2026.

Dragonwilds cooking FAQ
What's the fastest way to level Cooking in Dragonwilds?
Early on, cook farm vegetables and turn them into Sweet Veg Balls (50 XP each counting the ingredients, plus a +10% XP buff). From level 41, buying redberries from garou merchants and drying them is the quickest hands-off method. If you also want Farming XP, a crunchies farm trains both.
How do I stop burning food?
Level up. Each power level halves your burn chance when it unlocks, and it keeps dropping every level after. Cook ingredients a tier or two below your best for safe XP, and wear the Cooking cape at 99 to stop burning entirely.
Why won't my stone range or cooking range work?
Both ranges need a roof over them. Campfires are the opposite and won't work under a roof.
How do I unlock the cooking range?
Reach Cooking level 16, then interact with a basic campfire to learn the recipe. You'll need 18 ash planks, 8 bronze bars, 20 stone, 8 clay and 10 fire runes.
Do food buffs stack?
You can have one food perk and one potion perk at the same time, plus a ring like the Inspiring Ring of Cooking. A second perk food replaces the first, but plain food without a perk doesn't.
Is the dirty water method still good for Cooking XP?
No. It was popular in the first weeks after launch, but purifying water now gives only 1 XP and the cooking pot it relied on has been removed.
